The Tony and Grammy award-winning creators of Spring Awakening reunite alongside Jessie Nelson for this powerful and charming musical.

World War II, in the rubble of the blitz, Alice Spencer encourages her friend Alfred to escape with her into their cherished childhood book and journey down the rabbit hole to wonderland. As they travel through the tale, Alice by Heart explores first love, coming to terms with loss, and finding the courage to move forward in the hardest of times.

This production features flashing lights, smoke, Haze, war and some violence and strong language.

Duration: 90 minutes, no interval

Kate Budgen

Director

Kate trained at Birkbeck College and on the National Theatre Studio Directors course. She has been a Creative Associate at the Bush Theatre and an Assistant and Associate Director for The Gate Theatre, The Almeida, The Opera Group, Pentabus Theatre, the Bush Theatre, Opera North and for the Michael Grandage Company.

She joined Girl From the North Country as Associate Director in 2019 and she is a Senior Performance Tutor at Mountview.

Ellen is a musical director, pianist and arranger and trained in musical direction at Mountview. MD credits include: Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (Leeds Playhouse/UK/Ireland tour), Waitress (UK/Ireland tour), Talent (Sheffield Crucible), Sleeping Beauty (King’s Lynn Corn Exchange), Aladdin (Ferneham Hall), Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (88 London Road, Brighton).

Assistant MD credits include: all-female workshop of How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying (Ryan Hugh Mackey Productions at CSSD). Arrangements: Pirates of Penzance – Rebooted (Brighton Fringe Festival), Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (Reduction for two pianos and cello), MD and arranger: for Puma (launch of Ladies UEFA Cup 2022 football strips) and The Starr Trust Charity Winter Ball (Hilton Hotel, Brighton).

Claira Vaughan

Choreographer

Claira is a choreographer, dance facilitator, associate director and movement director for stage, screen and large-scale events. Claira is the creator and Artistic Director of Rumour Mill Cabaret and POD – Post Olympic Dance.

She is a workshop leader for ‘Connections’ at the National Theatre. Credits include: Teenage Dick (Donmar Warehouse), Working (Sharjah Performing Arts Acadamy), The Beautiful Game, Spongebob the Musical, The Wedding Singer, Disney’s Freaky Friday, Lysistrata Jones (Arts Educational), Flashdance (Italia Conti), The Prince and The Pauper (The Watermill Theatre), The Goodbye Girl (The Gatehouse), See What I Want to See (Jermyn Street Theatre).

Large scale choreography and movement: The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee (Windsor Castle), Lego VIDIYO World Tour, London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Opening and Closing Ceremonies (London), Sochi 2014 Winter Olympic Opening and Closing Ceremonies including audition tour (Russia), Saudi Cup (Queens Park FC), FA Cup Final – Opening Ceremony 2018 (Wembley Stadium) and Islamic Solidarity Games 2017 (Azerbaijan).

PJ McEvoy

Set & Costume Designer

PJ designs sets, costumes and video content for theatre having trained in Professional Production Skills at Guildford School of Acting.

Jack Goodwin

Lighting Designer

Jack is a freelance production electrician and programmer from Suffolk, currently based in London.

Recent production credits include: Flowers for Mrs Harris (Riverside Studios), She Loves Me, The Caucasian Chalk Circle, Earthquakes In London (Mountview), What I Hear I Keep (Talawa Studio).

Recent LD & ALD credits include: Absence, 9 to 5, Allocated (Mountview), Rapunzel (Theatre Peckham), Jack and the Beanstalk (Artrix).

He has just finished training at Mountview, graduating with a BA (Hons) degree in Theatre Production Arts with a lighting specialism.

Ella Wahlström (she/her)

Sound Designer

London-based Ella trained at Rose Bruford College. She is a board member at the Association for Sound Design and Production.
