Mountview nominated for Theatre Building of the Year 2020
Mountview has been nominated for The Stage – Theatre Building of the Year 2020.
The Stage was impressed not just by our two new theatres, but also by the creative building they inhabit, with our professional rehearsal spaces, production workshops, acting, TV and dance studios, community facilities, co-work space and offices for leading theatre arts organisations.
In the words of the judging panel: “Designed by Carl Turner Architects, the impressive and distinctive building, shortlisted as one of the buildings of the year at the New London Awards 2019, boasts two well-equipped performance spaces – a 200-seat theatre and the 80-seat Backstage Theatre. Between them, they will host more than 20 student productions a year, as well as work from visiting professional companies and community groups. The building houses 21 studios, production workshops and a West End-scale rehearsal space available for hire.
“Its location, in the heart of Peckham, has been a key factor in the success of the building. In addition to the facilities dedicated to vocational development, it’s also a vibrant social space that is open to the wider community.
“The building houses a number of bars and cafes and there’s a strong emphasis on engagement with the community. The building’s training facilities are available on evenings, weekends and holidays, with local community groups given discounted rates.”
The Stage Awards launched in 2010 to highlight the achievements of theatre companies and individuals across the UK and globally. The awards are judged by 50 leading figures from the UK theatre industry, working across the commercial, independent and subsidised sectors, along with senior figures from The Stage’s editorial team.
The winner of each category will be announced at the awards ceremony on January 31, 2020 at the Royal Opera House, London.
