Mountview Exams Launches Innovative Group Musical Theatre Syllabus, Endorsed by British Youth Music Theatre

Mountview Exams is proud to announce the launch of its groundbreaking Group Musical Theatre Syllabus, offering unparalleled flexibility in performance assessment. Building on the success of its Solo Musical Theatre Syllabus, this new initiative has already received the endorsement of British Youth Music Theatre (BYMT), aligning with their commitment to excellence, creativity, and inclusivity in musical theatre education.

With 11 of BYMT’s productions and development camps in the 2025 season set to be examined under this syllabus, the partnership highlights a shared ethos of celebrating young performers’ dedication, artistry, and collaboration.

A New Standard in Group Musical Theatre Assessment

The Group Musical Theatre Syllabus introduces two distinct qualifications, uniquely designed to accommodate both group performances and individual achievements within an ensemble setting:

  • Group qualifications – Assessing the collaborative work of the performers, resulting in a group mark
  • Individual within a Group qualifications – Recognising an individual’s contribution within a group or cast, awarding bespoke marks

Mountview Exams remains the only examination board to offer this dual-assessment approach within the same performance, ensuring performers and training centres have the flexibility to tailor their experience. A key component of the Individual Qualification is a post-performance Group Reflection, where candidates discuss their artistic choices and rehearsal process—deepening their understanding and skills.

A Syllabus for Every Performance Setting

Designed with inclusivity and accessibility at its core, the Group Musical Theatre Syllabus allows performances to be assessed in multiple formats, including:

  • Classwork collections created specifically for examination.
  • Full musical productions (with or without full-scale production elements).
  • Showcases featuring multiple performance groups.

Similar to the Solo Syllabus, the Group Syllabus accepts both published and devised material, rewarding not only technical performance and communication but also originality and imagination. Furthermore, Mountview Exams’ examiners are industry-trained professionals, many of whom are Mountview alumni, ensuring high-level, practitioner-led assessment.

A New Partnership with BYMT

Mountview Exams is thrilled to partner with British Youth Music Theatre to offer young performers an official Musical Theatre qualification. BYMT Artistic Director Emily Gray shared her enthusiasm for the collaboration:

We are delighted to be partnering with Mountview on their brand new Group Musical Theatre exams; these celebrate our shared ethos of recognising the creativity of young people whilst assessing their collaborative performance skills. It feels refreshing to have a syllabus that reflects the contemporary state of musical theatre and challenges our young performers on how their individual journey contributes to the success of the whole production. There is great value for our participants entering an exam provided by a significant drama training institution, such as Mountview, and gaining a qualification that acknowledges the key skills our young people will take forward into their lives and careers.”

Recognizing the immense time, effort, and passion that young performers invest in their craft, Mountview Exams is committed to providing a rigorous yet rewarding assessment framework that acknowledges and celebrates their achievements.
